In a stunning development, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in Alberta this winter has plummeted by a staggering 50%, compared to the same period last year. This decline is not a coincidence, but a direct result of the government's controversial policies.
Chris Gallaway, executive director of Friends of Medicare, an Alberta public health advocacy group, puts it bluntly: "Everything they did this year was designed to lower vaccine uptake."
According to official data, nearly 480,000 COVID-19 shots were given between October 2024 and January 2025. However, this season, between October 2025 and January 2026, the number of vaccines administered dropped to around 230,000.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The United Conservative Party (UCP) government in Alberta has implemented a series of restrictions, including a $100 "administrative cost" for most residents seeking vaccination at public health clinics. This fee, along with other potential charges at pharmacies, has made accessing vaccines much more difficult and expensive.
Initially, the UCP government even considered making healthcare workers pay for their COVID-19 vaccines, but after pushback from unions, they reversed this decision for some workers.
Gallaway argues that these measures have made COVID-19 vaccines too costly and inaccessible for many Albertans, especially in a province already struggling with vaccine hesitancy and an overwhelmed healthcare system.
"We've heard extreme frustration from people trying to navigate the confusing booking system and those who were told they'd have to pay for the vaccine," Gallaway said.
And this is the part most people miss...
The UCP's justification for these restrictions is to reduce "wasted" vaccine doses, citing a $135 million cost in 2023-24. However, numerous large-scale studies have proven that COVID-19 vaccines save lives and reduce the strain on healthcare systems.
A recent global study by the JAMA Network found that between 2020 and 2024, COVID-19 vaccines averted an estimated 2.5 million deaths and increased lifespans for those aged 60 and above.
Meanwhile, Canadian data from 2021-2022 shows that unvaccinated individuals had a significantly higher likelihood of hospitalization or death due to COVID-19.
So, why is the UCP government taking such a controversial stance?
Some argue that the party's leadership, including Premier Danielle Smith, has been influenced by anti-vaccine rhetoric since 2022. Smith's own statements and the party's MLAs have been criticized for spreading misinformation and pandering to a right-wing base.
In Quebec, a similar fee structure has been implemented, with the government citing high costs of wasted vaccine doses as their rationale. As a result, vaccination rates have also dropped, and hospitals are overwhelmed with an early respiratory illness season and a new measles outbreak.
